Dental sealants are applied over an individual’s back teeth to prevent the occurrence of cavities and tooth decay. They consist of a thin layer of painted acrylic that is designed to block off the deep pits and fissures that are often present on a person’s molars. After sealants have been applied, they establish an effective barrier against harmful bacteria and acids.
The deep grooves and fissures located on a person’s back teeth are home to roughly 75 percent of all tooth decay found inside the mouth. These areas are known to be very difficult to reach, even with regular brushing and flossing. By applying dental sealants, these rough surfaces are smoothed out, and they become significantly easier to clean and maintain. When taken care of properly, dental sealants should last for several years.
Many children and teenagers who are still developing proper brushing and flossing habits receive dental sealants as a way of protecting their teeth. Baby teeth, in particular, are great candidates for dental sealants, since they usually feature deep grooves and fissures. Adults can also receive sealants as a way of protecting their back teeth from cavities and decay.
The process of applying dental sealants only requires a couple of minutes per tooth. The first step is to dry and clean any tooth that is designated for sealing. Next, an etching solution is used to roughen the surface of the teeth and allow the sealant to bond more easily. We then carefully paint the acrylic sealant onto the surface of the teeth and allow the substance to dry. After the process is finished, we will make sure that the teeth have been properly sealed.
